How to switch a WordPress website to https using the Really Simple SSL?

Prerequisites:

  1. SSL certificate: Your website must have a valid SSL certificate installed and enabled. You can typically get an SSL certificate from your hosting provider.
  2. WordPress website: You should have a WordPress website running on your hosting account.

Step 1: Install and activate the Really Simple SSL plugin

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for “Really Simple SSL” and install the plugin by clicking on the “Install Now” button.
  3. Once the plugin is installed, activate it by clicking on the “Activate” button.

Step 2: Run the SSL scan

  1. After activating the Really Simple SSL plugin, it will automatically scan your WordPress installation for any issues that may prevent it from switching to HTTPS.
  2. If there are any issues detected, the plugin will provide you with instructions on how to resolve them.

Step 3: Force HTTPS redirect

  1. Once the scan is complete, the Really Simple SSL plugin will automatically force all traffic to your website to use HTTPS.
  2. This means that all visitors to your website will be redirected from HTTP to HTTPS.

Step 4: Verify HTTPS connection

  1. To verify that your website is properly using HTTPS, you can visit the following URL in your browser:
https://www.your-domain.com
  1. If you see a padlock icon in the address bar, and the URL starts with “https://,” then your website is successfully using HTTPS.

Step 5: Fix mixed content issues (Optional)

  1. After switching to HTTPS, there may be some links on your website that are still using HTTP. These are known as mixed content issues.
  2. You can use the Really Simple SSL plugin’s “Fix mixed content” feature to automatically fix these issues.
  3. To do this, go to Settings > Really Simple SSL and click on the “Fix mixed content” button.
