Prerequisites:
- SSL certificate: Your website must have a valid SSL certificate installed and enabled. You can typically get an SSL certificate from your hosting provider.
- WordPress website: You should have a WordPress website running on your hosting account.
Step 1: Install and activate the Really Simple SSL plugin
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for “Really Simple SSL” and install the plugin by clicking on the “Install Now” button.
- Once the plugin is installed, activate it by clicking on the “Activate” button.
Step 2: Run the SSL scan
- After activating the Really Simple SSL plugin, it will automatically scan your WordPress installation for any issues that may prevent it from switching to HTTPS.
- If there are any issues detected, the plugin will provide you with instructions on how to resolve them.
Step 3: Force HTTPS redirect
- Once the scan is complete, the Really Simple SSL plugin will automatically force all traffic to your website to use HTTPS.
- This means that all visitors to your website will be redirected from HTTP to HTTPS.
Step 4: Verify HTTPS connection
- To verify that your website is properly using HTTPS, you can visit the following URL in your browser:
https://www.your-domain.com
- If you see a padlock icon in the address bar, and the URL starts with “https://,” then your website is successfully using HTTPS.
Step 5: Fix mixed content issues (Optional)
- After switching to HTTPS, there may be some links on your website that are still using HTTP. These are known as mixed content issues.
- You can use the Really Simple SSL plugin’s “Fix mixed content” feature to automatically fix these issues.
- To do this, go to Settings > Really Simple SSL and click on the “Fix mixed content” button.
